The US is the largest fund jurisdiction globally. Fund managers and investors benefit from the country’s political and financial stability. The jurisdiction, specifically the state of Delaware, is a popular destination for investors and managers in the private investment funds sector, like private equity and hedge funds. This is largely thanks to the country’s business-friendly regulations, especially for institutional investors.

Global firms are present in the highly competitive US mutual fund market. In 2021, the US mutual fund industry remained the largest globally, with net assets of USD 26.96 trillion. The United States accounts for about 40 per cent of the global mutual fund market.

The common types of investment funds in the US?

  • Open-ended funds
  • Closed-ended funds
  • Unit investment trusts (UITs)
Mutual funds are open-ended funds. Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are often formed as open-ended funds, but they can also be structured as UITs. ETFs, like mutual funds, are investment companies registered by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that allow investors to pool their money in a fund that invests in stocks, bonds, other assets or some combination of these investments. This is in exchange for receiving an interest in the investment pool. However, unlike mutual funds, ETFs do not sell or redeem individual shares from retail investors directly.
